At lcufftu the colonel, who wa.3 Bitting- 0:1 the back seat, says a writer in tho Now York Sun, reached down iuVj the waon boa and pulled out a "water uoj" about six iaohes lon.'j. Thh eor.viueed tho tourists that ;cn cx 1-ra ordinary storm was ia progress, mil to s.iuw extent prepared tlicra for what fi.'lhv.ved. "Little by little," taid .the judcre, "the botnbaidmcut increased, until liz ards and toads tvero Ihicker'n flics. We : turned up our coat collars and pulled down our hats, but it did no good. They'd strike us in the face, in the lap, on the back and all over, and the horses became wild with terror. Wo lost our way, and tho major got out to look at the ground, but jumped back Into the wa;on aain with a yell, say. Ing it was knee deep with lizards. By this time it had stopped raining and we came to the conclusion, after mature, reflection, that the area of the storm could not be large, and that if we moved straight ahead in almost any di rection wo would p.oon be out of it. Acting on this determination we start ed up again, and in the course of half an hour we struck hard ground. We camped near there, and when daylight came we went baok a ways and exam ined tho lizards. There were millions of them, tho great majority of them being dead as the result of their fall; but there were plenty of live ones, and the way they were crawling was a cau tion." Some one having asked what theory they had to advaneo in explanation of this visitation, the major said that there wa3 a lake on the summit of the mountain oif toward Banning that was f ill of lizards, and he" had no doubt taat the wind, which was very high, had ssooped out that body of water with all its contents and dumped them on the Laramie plains. Ho knew of a similar case in Kansas. A tornado had followed tho line of a river and scooped it out so clean for a distance of nine teen miles that fanners living thirty miles from tho stream found fish, tur tles and frogs in their front dooryards, and believed they had rained down. The colonel said ho had brought a few of the lizards In to show the folks, and he would get them, but, after search-' Ing the wagon box lu vain, he wa forced to apologize by saying that they had probably come to life and crawled away. Capt. Nelson, the saloonkeeper, who had been a patient listener, shook hi head and said: "Old Hank Moore was the only man I ever knew who could get 'em and bo kind of plcusant and sociable with 'cm. IIo never made no fuss, never got excited, and never got acared. He'd be walking along on the sidewalk, and all of a sudden ho would see a little baby elephant uhead of him, and would run along and try to climb ou his back. Then, when he'd fall, he'd swear that somebody tripped him up, and he'd get all over it. An hour later he would get you off in the corner and tell you confidentially that he wanted a drink, but that he couldn't swallow it unless you took that alligator off the bar. I've ax-en Hank go out in the street lots of times to avoid stepping on a toad that ho thought ho aaw. Hut he waa always happy and good natured about It. "One day he came in from the Dodge City plains with a long atory about see ing a drove of elephunta out there. I didn't know him no well then aa I did afterward, and he waa no quiet about it that I iH'licvvd him, and jtiat for the fun of the thing I drove out there with him. Then he wanted me to take one of them home ith me, and just to pleaae him I pre tended to put one into the wngon. He atted the Imaginary elephant, and waa very contented with It until we got moat to Laramie, and then it vanlatied." Aftei all hand had partaken of th lan.llo-d cheer, he added: '"New, then, jiulffe, major and colonel, I don't mind li llii g jou that Hank Moore's drove of elephants waa area In theaame place that the 1 1 tarda were, hut there waa eomcihlnff rather cuter tainlng about tho iay hd lel Vm. Albert Franklin Matthews tella an Interesting story of "The Evolution of a Battleship," in the Ccutury. This is a history of the construction of the In diana, so far the only vessel of this class we have in our navy. After de scribing the wonderful power of this monster, the most formidable engine of war in the wcrld, and the manner of its construction, Mr. Matthews says: So the building goes cn until the launching day comes, and two broad ways are built up against the bottom of the vessel, and the keel-blocks oc which it has been resting are knocked away. In the launch of thn Indiana Mr. Nixon ran a ro .v of eloctric lights beneath the bottom of the vessel, add ing another innovation to the details of American .ship-building. Each launching way con.;iot3 of upper and lower planking, between which is spread thousands of pounds of the best tallow. At the bow of the boat these upper and lower pi mln are ( lamped together, and when all ii ready they are sawed apart, and tho vessel starts. The upper part of the ways slides iutj the water with t!ie vessel, and the low er part with tlio smoking hot tallow remains stationary. . A launch in the::o days is so smooth, and so soon ended, rarely occupying more than twoive.seconds from start to finish,' that one scarcely realises its difficulties. Throa things are absolute ly necessary; it must be on time, whe;. the tidal water is highest; it must be of smart speed, so as not to stick on its downward journey to the water; and it must be accompln-.hcd without straining. So complex a thing is a launch that tha careful engincer-in-charge is able to estimate the strain on every part of the vessel for every position it occupies, at intervals of one foot, on its way down the incline. There is ono supreme moment. It is when the vessel is nearly two-thirds in the water. The buoyancy of the water raises the ves: el and throws its weight on its shoulders. Here is where the greatest danger of straining comes, and should the ways break down the vessel would lie ruined, a matter of nearly two million dollars in a ship like the Indiana when it was launched. The launch over, the machinery is lifted in and iitted, and then coiner the board of government experts, who look the ves: :ol over inch by inch, the fires are sturte.l and tho trial trip fol lows. Per f jur hours, amid suppressed excitement that answers nervously to every quiver of the vessel, tho engines are run at fall speed. A premium or a penalty i5 at stake now. Tho breakage of a bolt or the disarrangement cf a valve may mean thousands of dollars of loss to .ho contractors. Trained workmen iro looked in tho flrernns. not to be rb tensed until the ta-.t is over. A., recently returned to Los Angeles after making a trip with three companions in a small boat down the Colorado river, from Yuma to the Gulf of California, -to ascertain if the channel could be made navigable for commerce. The river, he says, changes its course in many places every year at the time of the June rise, shifting its bed often as much as six or eight miles to left or right, and it would be impossible to impound the water so as to secure a regular navigable channel. The tides, too, about the mouth of the river are most erratic; one of its features is the great bore, which, near the full of the moon every month, sweeps in a solid wall of water several feet high, up tha upper part of the gulf and twenty miles into the mouth of the Colorado. An attempt to float any boat in the river's, mouth at that time would be fatal. At the mouth of the river the party found the ruins of an old ship- ! yard and the decaying hulks of five ; steamers, half sunken in the mud, the relics of an attempt made some twenty ' three years ago to establish a line of steamers to ply up the river to Fort Yuma.
